IRIDITE

Iridite, also known as chromate conversion coating, is a non-electrolytic chemical treatment primarily for aluminum and its alloys. It forms a thin protective layer on the metal, improving its corrosion resistance while preserving electrical conductivity.

This process is ideal for electronic, aeronautical, military, and industrial components due to its compatibility with demanding technical environments.

Technical Specifications

Advantages of Iridite Treatment

  • Excellent corrosion resistance, without changing the dimensions of the part.
  • Electrical conductivity is preserved, which is perfect for electronic parts.
  • Good adhesion base for paint and coatings.
  • Compatible with industrial and military standards (MIL-C-5541F, MIL-DTL-81706B, ASTM B921-02, RoHS, etc.).
  • Eco-friendly versions are available, without hexavalent chromium (e.g., Iridite 10/20, Alodine 5200/5700).
  • Quick and economical process, suitable for large-scale production.

Compatible metals

The Iridite treatment is mainly used on: :

  • Pure aluminum
  • Aluminum alloys :
    • 2000 series (Al-Cu)
    • 5000 series (Al-Mg)
    • 6000 series (Al-Mg-Si)
    • 7000 series (Al-Zn)
  • Some other lightweight metals, depending on the process variant.

The steps of our iridite process

Iridite is a chemical surface treatment often applied to aluminum to prepare the part for anodizing or to improve paint adhesion and corrosion resistance. Here are the main steps for performing a typical Iridite treatment:

  1. Step 1

    Surface preparation

    • Cleaning / degreasing: remove oils, dust, and metal residues.
    • Rinsing with water to eliminate impurities.
  2. Step 2

    Light etching (optional)

    • Sometimes a light alkaline or acid etch is performed to remove the natural oxide layer and uniform the surface.
    • Thorough rinsing follows this step.
  3. Step 3

    Iridite treatment

    • Immersion in the Iridite bath (specific chemical solution based on chromates or modern trivalent treatments according to MIL-C-5541 standard).
    • Chemical reaction: formation of a thin, self-healing protective film on the aluminum.
    • Duration and temperature are controlled according to the product specifications.
  4. Step 5

    Final rinsing

    • Rinse thoroughly with deionized water to remove any excess chemical.
    • The part should be uniformly covered with a conversion coating.
  5. Step 5

    Drying

    • Drying with hot air or at a controlled temperature.
    • The part is now ready for painting, anodizing, or bonding.
